lst Lt. Mathew Fazzari of Walla Walla died on June 6, when his helicopter was brought down by enemy fire in Afghanistan. Mathew was born December 1, 1986, in Walla Walla to parents Greg and Susan Mock Fazzari. He attended the Catholic schools in Walla Walla and graduated from Gonzaga University in Spokane in 2010. Showing a deep love for his country he graduated in the top 5% of nationwide ROTC cadets and finished as #1 in his flight school at Ft. Rucker, Alabama. An outstanding, unselfish young man with a deep faith in God, he was willing to risk his life for the freedom we all enjoy.

He has left behind a wife, Tovah Fazzari of Walla Walla, who has been the love of his life since high school days, along with two very young boys, Dominic (2), and Samuel (8 months). Other survivors, besides his parents, include his sister Danielle, brothers Luke and Shawn, grandmother Marie Fazzari, all of Walla Walla, along with grandparents Dean and Arla Mock of Richland and great-grandmother Evelyn Mock of Spokane. In addition he leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who will also miss him dearly. His grandfather, Sam Fazzari, of Walla Walla, recently preceded him in death.
